BARNARDOS VIETNAM CHALLENGE

Situated in eastern Indochina and boasting over 2,000km of coastline from North to South, Vietnam is located in a honey bowl of rich and traditional culture. Throughout its history, Vietnam has been subjected to strong foreign influences, from periodic Chinese rule over the past 2000 years, through French colonialism, to Japanese wartime occupation and finally the Vietnam War ending in 1975.

Most visitors to Vietnam are overwhelmed by the inspirational beauty of the country's natural setting: the Red River Delta in the north, the Mekong Delta in the south and almost the entire coastal strip are a patchwork of brilliant green rice paddies tended by women in conical hats.

Vietnam also offers an opportunity to see a country with a fascinating blend of ancient and modern sights and a mix of traditional charm and rare beauty rapidly opening up to the outside world.

The climate is monsoonal in the north with hot, rainy season (May to September) and a warm, dry season (October to March).  Temperatures are expected to be in the high 20°C during the 3rd ActionAid Overseas Challenge – which will be based in the beautiful Sapa in Northwest Vietnam, a magical combination of alpine landscapes, ethnic cultures and bracing mountain air and Vietnam's highest peak, Mount Fansipan.

About Barnardos - Ireland's leading children's charity

Shannon

Shannon is five and she started big school last year. She adores her teacher. However, her teacher has noticed that Shannon doesn’t seem to have made any friends. She is quiet and withdrawn, and if she makes a mistake in class she is never far from tears.  Teacher has had to tell the other children to stop picking on Shannon because her uniform smells funny.

At the end of the day Shannon clings to the teacher. She doesn’t want to go home.
Shannon is scared of the big voices at home. Her mam and her step dad shout at each other every time they drink. She knows to get a bowl of corn flakes when mam forgets about the dinner, or when she’s fallen asleep in the afternoon. Sometimes her mam forgets to pick her up from school.

About Barnardos

No case in Barnardos is the same, but the children Barnardos deal with have one thing in common. They could otherwise be forgotten by society. We want to live in an Ireland where no child gets left behind, and we will do everything in our power to make this happen. Our aim is to inject hope into what sometimes seems like a hopeless situation.

Barnardos is Ireland’s leading children’s charity. Each year we work directly with just under 5,000 children and families throughout Ireland. Barnardos also raises issues through our advocacy programme to make Ireland the best place in the world for all children in Ireland.

Barnardos works with children and families to break the cycle of poverty and educational disadvantage. We support families and build on their strengths to create brighter futures for their children.

Barnardos’ work is about helping children make the most of their lives, regardless of what they are up against.

We operate in over 30 Barnardos Centres in communities across Ireland. Every day we encounter children living brutalised lives. We work with families to improve parenting skills and tackle issues such as poverty, domestic abuse, addiction and the impact these problems have on children.

Even though a lot of our work happens at a local level we also provide much needed support through a variety of central services such as our bereavement counselling service for children and our National Children’s Resource Centre.

We don’t give up on children like Shannon. We don’t give up on any child.
