THE HIMALAYAN CHALLENGE
18th - 29th NOVEMBER 2010

The 'Himalayan Challenge' will be the 12th Fundraising Hike for the Irish Charity Challenges trekking group - a band of very enthusiastic people from all over Ireland, of all ages and from all walks of life -and who, in a very short space of time, have become great friends, great supporters of a number of Irish Charities and regular participants in our walks both here and overseas.
A 6 week training programme is provided for those starting from scratch and a number of training walks are organised in early summer and before departure. All participants are expected to complete at least 2 of these 20/25 Kilometre walks - to demonstrate their fitness levels and as importantly, to get to know the other walkers.
The fundraising target is €5,750 per person and of that at approximately €3,000
will go to your designated charity.
Participation depends on three things –
you have to convince us of your commitment to fundraise, get fit and become part of the team
- we will then be very happy to invite you to join us in Nepal!
We look forward to hearing from you.

NEPAL
Nepal forms the very watershed of Asia. Landlocked between India & Tibet, it spans terrain from subtropical jungle to icy Himalaya. A dozen major ethnic groups coexist, speaking as many as fifty languages and dialects, while two of the world's greatest religions, Hinduism and Buddhism, overlap and mingle with older tribal traditions.
Our Challenge will be based in two different areas.
The Kathmandu Valley is a legendary land where gods mingle with mortals; ancient pagoda-roofed temples fill the skyline and where a devout population have created one of the finest human cultures on earth. The three cities of the valley, Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur, are adorned with artistic monuments, fabulous palaces and mystical temple squares. High above, the worlds greatest peaks - the Himalayas, form a protective cordon around this amazing valley and the rolling green heights on the rim offer incomparable pleasures of pristine wilderness without the rigors of a full scale mountain trek. The hilltop of Nagarot (2165m) is famous for its mountain panorama - the view extends from Dhaulagiri in the west, past Everest, to Kanchenjunga in the east and the thing to do in Dhulikhel(1715m) is to hike to the point southeast of the town in time for sunrise over the peaks.
The Annapurna region is situated to the north of Pokhara. The deepest river gorge in the world, the Kali Gandaki, cuts a path between the peaks and the natural mountain amphitheatre have made this region a mesmerizing area of trekking trails - with rice paddies, tropical oak forests before climbing into rhododendron and fir forests to reach the treeless landscape of the high mountains. Trekkers have dubbed the tails "the most beautiful walk in the world".
We are looking forward to going to this exciting destination and
hope that you will travel with us.
