THE CAPE TOWN EXPERIENCE
10th - 19th OCTOBER 2008
|
Following our successful Vietnam Adventure last year, this October we have decided to head south to Cape Town, South Africa. Our ten day adventure will see us trek over the Winelands, tackle the famous Table Mountain, walk through Hermanus where you can spot some whales and across the Cape of Good Hope nature reserve.

Cape Town is known as the Mother City of Africa and is regarded as one of the most beautiful regions in the world. The impressive presence of Table Mountain, flanked by the legendary Devil's Peak and historical Signal Hill, stands proudly above the city. Beautiful white sandy beaches along a peaceful coastline frame the Cape Peninsula, which is famed for its unique floral and animal kingdom, rugged landscapes, bountiful rivers and dams, panoramic vistas and seascapes and magnificent countryside.
|
The surrounding area extends far into the now famous Winelands, green in summer and redgold in autumn.

Cape Town is not only a city of breathtaking natural beauty but is also a city of culture, built on a history that is reflected in the architecture, cuisine, music and dance. The city is a rare cultural gem resulting from the amalgamation of Indonesian, French, Dutch, British and German settlers and the local Bushman, Hottentot tribes and the Bantu tribes from the north. With a warm summer and temperate winter climate together with a friendly community, the Western Cape and the Mother City are an ideal base for this, our second overseas trek.

Who will I be helping? |

our footsteps will help the more vulnerable children in Ireland to find their feet in life. Children like Ciara.

Three years ago, Ciara’s mum was hurt when a stolen car crashed into her. She has severe brain injury. She finds daytoday tasks impossible. She can’t walk without help and has moved into the living room permanently. The toilet is upstairs so Ciara and her dad take turns to help her to the bathroom.

Ciara is 12, but already she has the responsibilities of a mother. She makes sure her brothers and sisters get up for school and gets them dressed. When her dad is busy she looks after them too. Ciara doesn’t want to go to school any more. It is the last place she wants to be. She has missed so many days in school that she feels stupid when the teacher asks her to read out loud.

The washing machine in the house is broken so she has to handwash her uniform. That takes ages. Sometimes the other girls say she smells. Ciara hates them for making fun of her.

The days Ciara makes it to school she finds it really hard to concentrate as she worries about her mum. Will she be OK by herself? Is her dad going to be home early to look after her? Will one of her brothers or sisters get hurt if she is not looking after them?

Sometimes Ciara wishes it was her that had been hit by the car. Then her mum could look after them all.

About Barnardos - Ireland's leading children's charity
Barnardos is Ireland’s leading children’s charity. Each year we work directly with just under 5,000 children and families throughout Ireland. Barnardos wants to make Ireland the best place to live for all children. That’s why we believe in campaigning and advocating for children everywhere.
No two children are the same but the children Barnardos deals with have one thing in common. They could otherwise be forgotten by society. We want to live in an Ireland where no child gets left behind, and we will do everything in our power to make this happen. Our aim is to inject hope into what sometimes seems like a hopeless situation.
We operate in over 30 Barnardos Centres in communities across Ireland. We see the devastating effects poverty has on children like Ciara every single day. We work facetoface day by day, making real tangible improvements to their lives. We work with families to improve parenting skills and tackle issues such as poverty, domestic abuse, addiction and the impact these problems have on children.
Barnardos’ work is about helping children make the most of their lives, regardless of what they are up against.
Even though a lot of our work happens at a local level we also provide much needed support through a variety of central services such as our bereavement counselling service for children and our National Children’s Resource Centre.
We don’t give up on children like Ciara. We don’t give up on any child.
